Here’s a lesson on how to play Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton on bass: (bass tabs are here)
I use this song in my lesson on the root and 5th pattern as an example of a bass line that uses the root and 5th. The bassist is playing the root and 5th’s on top of the chords being played:
- A root and E 5th,
- D root and A 5th,
- E root and B 5th.
The bass line helps create that classic country, “honky tonk” feel.
Check out all of our lessons on common bass patterns to learn more about bass patterns and how they are used to construct bass lines.
